And of course there is John Njane, with his heart of compassion, seemingly boundless energy, and integrity, keeps everything running. He is a human dynamo aware of all the needs of the people in the whole area, going 90 miles an hour.
He is the epicenter of The Kenya Initiative: From Street To School and Flow Of Hope. John has taken responsibility for all the students to make sure the school fees are paid and everyone is where they are supposed to be. Neither organization would exist apart from him! The second photo is from a retreat with many of the students sponsored by both charities.
He and several siblings had to leave home when he was 14 after his father was disabled—his father could no longer work and there wasn’t enough money to support the entire family. He lucked out and didn’t end up on the street but all formal education stopped. He may have stopped sitting at a school desk but this young man is scary smart. His English is impeccable; his knowledge about computers, mechanics, farming, construction and human nature is boundless.
A relatively new adventure that John has undertaken is a Pre-School built on his property called “Roots Of Hope”. As this photo shows we are deep in discussion about how important that disadvantaged children have a good educational, social and physical start to their lives. The “roots” must become strong. “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world” –Nelson Mandela
